The Global Footprint of Fast Fashion Icon, Zara
Zara, a trailblazer in the fast fashion industry, now operates nearly 6,500 stores worldwide. This article delves into the history and global reach of this Spanish brand.
Latest Collaborations
In October 2022, Zara launched a collaboration with Kaia Gerber, daughter of Cindy Crawford. At just 21 years old, Gerber has already worked with top fashion houses like Marc Jacobs, Versace, Saint Laurent, Miu Miu, Valentino, and Chanel. In her collection with Zara, she dives into her personal wardrobe to create an accessible fashion line that echoes the ’90s. The 41-piece collection features oversized garments, a form-fitting dress, a tiny miniskirt, sexy crop tops, as well as boots, sneakers, and accessories. All these are available at Zara’s friendly prices, offering effortless style and good fit.
On September 8, Zara introduced a capsule collection designed in partnership with American designer of Cuban descent, Narciso Rodriguez. Under the leadership of Maria Ortega, who took over Zara in April last year, the brand has been elevating its products through high-fashion partnerships.
Narciso Rodriguez, a long-time friend of the Ortega family and celebrated for his perfumes, revisited the archives of his early creations to refresh his most iconic pieces for this Fall 2022 collection. Notable is the slip dress designed for Carolyn Bessette Kennedy’s wedding in 1996. The collection features essential pieces like a long black wool coat, an oversized white jumpsuit, a red midi dress, a wool bustier, and a flowing satin set comprising a top and pants, with prices ranging from 29.95 to 359 euros. British fashion photographer Craig McDean captured the campaign images, featuring model Supernova aka Natalia Vodianova, showcasing the collection’s clean and elegant designs.
Return Costs at Zara: Who Pays?
Since April 28, 2022, Zara has implemented a charge for returned items. This new policy was introduced quietly but could significantly impact consumer behavior. Returns made through mail now incur a fee of 1.95 euros, deducted from the refund amount, although returns to stores remain free. This change is part of Zara’s strategy to address environmental concerns by reducing CO2 emissions from transportation associated with frequent returns. The move is somewhat unexpected for a brand synonymous with rapid production and consumption. This policy currently applies only to Zara, but there are concerns it may extend to other Inditex brands. H&M has also introduced a similar charge for online returns.
The Rise of Zara in Ready-to-Wear Fashion
Zara began as a small workshop in 1963 in La Coruña, Galicia, founded by Amancio Ortega Gaona, along with his wife Rosalia Mera and other family members. Initially specializing in pajamas and housecoats, the company expanded rapidly. By 1975, Ortega opened the first Zara store, which quickly became known for its fresh collections and luxury-inspired store design at affordable prices. The brand’s success led to international expansion, starting with a store in Porto in 1988 and reaching New York by 1989. Today, Zara operates in 202 markets with over 6,500 stores worldwide. Zara Home, launched in 2002, marked the brand’s entry into home decor, initially through an online store in 2007, and fashion followed in 2010.
However, the COVID-19 pandemic forced Zara to close 1,200 stores, though it partly offset these closures by opening 450 new, larger stores designed to enhance customer experience and integrate physical and digital retail. During the first quarter of 2020, online sales surged by 50%.
Shopping for Zara in France
France welcomed its first Zara store in 1990 in Paris. Today, the country boasts 125 Zara locations, including the prominent Zara Opéra in Paris, which spans four floors and 4,000 square meters, reflecting the brand’s hallmark approach of runway-inspired collections at competitive prices.
Why Celebrities Love Zara
Zara has garnered a global following among celebrities like Kate Middleton, Letizia of Spain, and Emily Ratajkowski, who wore a Zara suit at her wedding in February 2018.
Innovative Moves to Attract New Customers
Zara continuously innovates to keep its market edge, launching lines such as Zara Man, Zara Woman, and Zara Kids, and expanding into makeup and limited edition collections. In 2021, Zara collaborated with French artist Charlotte Gainsbourg on a collection dominated by denim, a staple in the singer and actress’s wardrobe. Committed to sustainability, Zara aims for all its collections to be made from sustainable materials by 2025, despite facing criticisms over its environmental impact and labor practices.
