This sugar cake is not only easy to make but also exceptionally delicious. It’s a comforting treat that is perfect for an afternoon snack or breakfast. This recipe will guide you through making a soft, slightly sweet dough topped with a thin layer of butter and sugar that caramelizes upon baking, creating a golden, crispy exterior.

Ingredients

Serves: 10

For the dough:

– Lukewarm milk: 100 ml
– Eggs: 2
– Granulated sugar: 3 tsp
– Softened butter: 120 g
– Active dry yeast: 35 g
– Flour: 350 g
– A pinch of salt

For the topping:

– Butter (cut into pieces): A small amount
– Sugar: A few teaspoons

Preparation

Total Time: 2 hours 40 minutes

– Prep Time: 20 minutes
– Bake Time: 20 minutes

Instructions:

1. Start by combining the lukewarm milk with the yeast and the three teaspoons of sugar in a bowl. Allow this mixture to sit until it starts to foam and swell.
2. In the bowl of a stand mixer, add the flour and a pinch of salt. Pour in the milk and yeast mixture and start mixing on low speed. Gradually add the eggs and softened butter, increasing the speed to high. If the dough becomes sticky, sprinkle a little more flour and continue mixing until the dough pulls away from the sides of the bowl.
3. Cover the bowl with a kitchen towel and let the dough rise for about one hour, or until it has doubled in size.
4. After the dough has risen, roll it out with a rolling pin and transfer it to a baking dish. Allow it to rest and rise for another hour.
5. Just before baking, dot the surface of the dough with pieces of butter and sprinkle with sugar.
6. Preheat the oven to 320°F (160°C) and bake the cake for 15 to 20 minutes, or until golden brown and the topping has caramelized.
