Suitcase Essentials for your trip to the Breeders’ Cup

With the Breeders’ Cup at Santa Anita Park coming up right around the corner, you’ll want to make sure you bring all the right essentials and outfits to make the most of your trip to the World Championship races. Of course you will have your race day outfit and hat picked out, but you’ll want to be dressed to impress for the rest of your trip and make sure that you are prepared.

Breeders' Cup 2013 Packing Essentials

A little black dress is definitely a Breeders’ Cup 2013 suitcase essential.

First, everyone needs a good steamer. None of your outfits will look fabulous with wrinkles. Steamers can also handle delicate fabrics better than the small iron that’s usually provided in hotel rooms. Try the Steamfast Compact Steamer or the Conair. Next you’ll need a variety of outfits. Depending on how long you stay you may need less or more, but listed below are some essential basic outfits to bring. You’ll need a relaxed weekend outfit for shopping and sightseeing, you will also need a nice outfit for a night out on the town, and of course you’ll need an outfit for a nice Sunday brunch. Also, pack a bonus workout outfit in case you get to sneak in a workout or a nice walk around Pasadena and Los Angeles.

Weekend Outfit: The key here is to look stylish and yet effortless at the same time. You want to look and feel relaxed and yet still put together. Here are my picks for this look: the flat bootie, a relaxed and full mini skirt, an embellished sweatshirt and a large loose scarf. All of these items are on trend and combined they give that laid back but polished vibe. I like the versatile bootie from Nine West, paired with the black skirt from Modcloth, and an embellished sweatshirt, topped off with a yellow scarf to add a pop of color, that can also double as a pashmina wrap.

Night on the Town: You want a look that can read elegant or hip and fun. You can never go wrong with a little black dress. If you want to look hip and urban then pair your LBD, or little black dress, with a moto jacket, high heeled booties and a large envelop clutch. If you want a more sophisticated dressed up look then pair your LBD with some statement jewels and a sleek jeweled box clutch. If you have two big nights planned you can even recycle your same LBD and do an urban edgy look one night and change over to the more sophisticated look the next or vice versa and just change your accessories. My picks for this look are the two LBDs from Modcloth pictured below.

Sunday Brunch: The Sunday brunch look can be casual or a little more dressed up, but you definitely don’t want to look like your wearing a repeat of your race day outfit. Try a crisp pair of dark skinny jeans paired with ballet flats and a fitted blazer or for a dressier look take the blazer and ballet flats and put them with a full skirt or a fit and flare dress. Try some of falls floral, which are darker than spring floral and which work great for day or pick pastels, which is a trend that is still going strong from spring. I like the floral dress and pastel skirt from Modcloth and the blazer and ballet flats shown below.

Packing Tips: These days checking luggage can get expensive. You can make room in your suitcase by rolling clothing items and putting them inside your shoes. And make sure to double Ziploc bag all of your toiletries to prevent any accidental leakage. Check stores like Target and Ulta and Sephora for miniatures of your favorite toiletries and cosmetics.

Beauty Tip: Whether traveling by air or car, skin has a way of getting parched when traveling so make sure to put on a heavy duty moisturizer at night like Olay Regenerist and try a refreshing pick me up facial spray during the day like Jurilique Rosewater Balancing Mist or Evian Facial Spray.
