Look Chic and Stay Warm at the Red Smith Handicap

This Saturday November 16th, the Red Smith Handicap will take place at the Aqueduct race track for its 57th running. The track is in upstate New York and it will be crisp with temperatures in the 50s so you’ll want to keep warm. Thankfully, one of the major trends this fall is the sweater trend. Traditionally, sweaters signified comfort, so you may not think a sweater is race day appropriate, but all the Fall 2013 runways were covered with models in sweaters of all varieties from cropped to oversized to embellished, making them not just a cold day comfy staple but a fashion forward statement that will be sure to wow at the Red Smith Handicap.

Red Smith Stakes 2013

Crisp with temperatures in the 50s, you’ll want to keep warm with opaque tights and embellished sweaters for the 2013 Red Smith Handicap at Aqueduct in New York.

My tip for race day is to keep your sweater looking luxurious like you’ve won big at the Aqueduct’s 415,000 square foot multi-level casino. Stay away from cardigans or button ups that can read too casual and choose luxe glamorous fabrics like cashmere or try a sweater with embellishments to add some sparkle to your look. I would pair your sweater, like the Sweetly Speckled Sweater with a flared out skirt, like the Taking in Tokyo leather mini and for extra cool girl style and to stay warm pair your flared out mini with dark tights. Remember that tights should always be opaque not sheer. Try pairing your outfit with a bootie, such as the Michael Kors York Bootie, and keep the bootie in the same color as your tights in order to keep your legs looking long, streamlined, and lean.

If tights are not your thing and you want your legs covered, break the mold and try pants. Just make sure the pants are not casual and don’t read as office attire, choose a cropped pant that has some sheen to it. I like a sparkly sweater paired with pants silk trousers. Make sure to pair it with a pointy toe stiletto to make those ankles look slim and to bring together your look, just stay away from an ankle strap which can cut off your leg.

Since an embellished or luxe sweater reads soft and feminine, make sure to pick a fascinator that has a feminine lady like vibe as well, like the one shown below. The bow and the netting with poms give it that soft feminine vibe that almost mimics a sweater. A Fiona Mangan fascinator (pictured below) from Fashion at the Races would pair perfectly with any of the outfits we picked for the Red Smith Handicap.

Beauty Tip: Pair your sweater look with soft hair. You don’t want your hair to be stick straight or pulled back tight, you want soft hair that is not overdone to match the softness of your look. Your hair should look and feel like silk. Try Redken’s All Soft line to help achieve that look, especially their Argan-6 Multi-Care Oil for Hair and a wide barrel curling iron to get a soft wave. Check out Leighton Meester’s (pictured below) soft pretty waves from her Gossip Girl days.
