Ski Fashion Hits the Streets
As the ski season kicks off, enthusiasts eagerly anticipate hitting the snowy slopes. It’s also the perfect time to sport stylish ski gear, but not just on the mountains anymore! Ski attire is now making its way into everyday street fashion.
Originally designed for the ski slopes, certain items have seamlessly transitioned into the daily wardrobes of style-savvy individuals. Take earmuffs, for example. Invented by Chester Greenwood in the late 19th century, earmuffs were created from a necessity when Greenwood, suffering from the cold while ice skating, had his grandmother fashion protection for his ears using fur. Today, earmuffs come in various styles and colors, becoming a fashionable accessory beyond their practical use.
Other ski essentials also find their place in urban settings. The chapka or faux fur bucket hat, along with moon boots—those bulky boots designed for warmth and stability in snow—are now worn regularly in city life. Fashion brand Jacquemus recently introduced two new boot designs in collaboration with an Italian label, one featuring long white faux fur reminiscent of yeti feet, and the other a shorter style in mohair.
Integrating Ski Wear into Fashion
The puffer jacket, a staple in many wardrobes, was originally designed for mountain expeditions. Credited to several individuals including Australian and French mountaineers George Finch in 1922 and Lionel Terry in the 1950s, as well as American Eddie Bauer in 1936 who conceptualized it during a fishing trip, all shared the common need to stay warm. This piece of practical clothing eventually paved its way to the runways of major fashion houses like Balenciaga, Maison Margiela, Alexander McQueen, and Isabel Marant.
Fashion brands are increasingly incorporating ski-inspired pieces into their collections. Zara, for instance, dedicated an entire collection to ski gear, featuring gloves, puffer jackets, waterproof pants, windbreakers, thermal t-shirts, and ski suits.
The collection quickly became a hit, with fashion enthusiasts embracing the new minimalist and chic designs. The quality and versatility of the items reportedly surpassed expectations, proving suitable for both everyday wear and mountain adventures.
Fashion Forward with Ski Inspired Collections
Skims, the brand launched by Kim Kardashian, has also ventured into ski wear by partnering with North Face to produce a line of clothing that blends minimalist style with practicality.
As ski gear continues to inspire urban fashion, it’s clear that the lines between functional sportswear and everyday style are blurring. The influence of ski attire on street fashion is a testament to the evolving dynamics of fashion, where practicality meets style in new and unexpected ways.
