1. Making the Apple Juice

Start by thoroughly washing your apples and cutting them into quarters.

Place water in a large pot and add the apples. Cook them until they are tender.

Allow the apples to cool completely in the pot; I usually leave them overnight and make the syrup the next day!

After cooling, place the apple pieces in a clean cloth over a sieve to filter the juice effectively. Squeeze the cloth to extract as much juice as possible, and include a bit of the cooking water.

2. Making the Syrup

Once you have extracted the juice, measure it and add an equal amount of sugar to a clean pot. Add the cinnamon sticks and star anise, then bring your mixture to a boil. Reduce the heat and let it simmer for about 30 minutes until the syrup thickens.

To test the consistency, drop a little syrup on a small plate; if it’s syrupy, it’s ready. Using a funnel, carefully pour the hot syrup into bottles, then immediately invert them to ensure they seal properly. I usually lean them against the sink edge to keep them upright!

After bottling, as I am a painter, I decided to paint my bottles…

3. Decorating the Bottles

As mentioned, I took the time to paint my bottles.

I also customized the bottles for a special touch!

Bottle Painting Details

I used acrylic paint! For the details, I employed macramé around the edges, added labels with the syrup’s ingredients, and decorated the caps with little golden candy paper.
