Breaking: Planetario’s Career Over After Shock Injury!

Retirement Announced for Planetario Following Injury

Planetario, initially slated to compete in the upcoming Grade 2 Del Mar Handicap this Sunday, has officially been retired due to an injury. This announcement follows a recent revelation about his physical condition.

According to Richard Mandella, the horse’s trainer, a workout on August 19 at Del Mar revealed a minor tear in Planetario’s suspensory ligament. This injury has prematurely ended the racing career of the 6-year-old.

Career Highlights and Background

Born and bred in Brazil, Planetario showed early promise in his racing career, achieving four wins out of eight races in his native country. His journey in the United States began with an optional-claiming allowance race in June 2022, where he finished fifth. He subsequently participated in 10 graded stakes races. Notably, he claimed victory in the San Juan Capistrano (G3) twice, once this year and once the previous year, as well as in the Hollywood Turf Cup (G2) in November.

Planetario kicked off 2024 with strong performances, securing second place in both the San Marcos (G3) and San Luis Rey (G3), followed by a third-place finish in the Charles Whittingham (G2).

Ownership and Career Earnings

Owned by Red Rafa Stud, Planetario concludes his racing career with an impressive record of 19 starts, including eight wins, three second-place finishes, and one third-place finish. His total earnings amounted to $390,548.

In discussions with Daily Racing Form, Mandella mentioned that the future location for Planetario’s retirement has not yet been determined, leaving some uncertainty about the next chapter in the life of this distinguished racehorse.
