Contrary to popular belief, style doesn’t have to take a back seat once you pass the age of 40. Many women feel restricted in their fashion choices as they age, mistakenly believing that certain trends like mini-skirts, graphic tees, or baggy jeans are solely for the younger crowd. Solène Gransard, a 49-year-old content creator, challenges this outdated notion with flair. Known on Instagram as @solenenyg_ or @notyourgirl.media, Solène champions the idea that fashion knows no age, and she’s all about breaking the so-called style rules for those over 40.
In a video released at the start of January 2025, Solène Gransard discusses various garments that women over 40 often avoid due to societal pressures, which, according to her, they absolutely shouldn’t! High on this list is the mini-skirt. She emphasizes that wearing a mini-skirt is all about attitude, personal style, and desires. She argues that this often-misunderstood piece shouldn’t be excluded from a wardrobe; it simply needs to be styled correctly. “For instance,” she explains, “pairing a mini-skirt with an oversized sweater to tone it down or with tall boots looks fantastic at any age.” She concludes by advising, “If showing off your legs doesn’t feel comfortable, then don’t force it, or maybe try it in winter with semi-opaque tights.”
While opinions vary in the comments section of her post, many agree that there’s no age limit for showing off one’s legs. One woman comments, “I love your explanations! I’m 56 and wear everything you’ve showcased and always receive compliments.”
Another adds, “I don’t see why we should change our habits at 40 if they still look great on us,” and yet another shares, “Honestly, I’ve never worn these styles better than after turning 40… they make me look 10 years younger.” Ultimately, what matters most is feeling comfortable in your clothes.
