Beholder Crushes Distaff Competition
To conclude day 1 of the 2013 Breeders’ Cup World Championship, Beholder and jockey Gary Stevens “crushed” the 2013 Breeders’ Cup Distaff, previously called the Ladies’ Classic, by at least six lengths. Close Hatches finished second behind Beholder followed Authenticity. Two-time defending champion five-year-old Royal Delta crossed the finish line in 4th place, denying her chance at making history as a three-time Distaff/Ladies’ Classic winner.
Beholder easily ran her best race today winning a $2 million purse against five other fillies & mares. She finished the 1 1/8 mile race in 1:47.77. Gary Stevens won his 9th Breeders’ Cup Distaff today for trainer Richard Mandella.
In response to Beholder’s performance owner B. Wayne Hughes stated, “You can’t be a champion unless you beat champions. Beholder has done enough to be a champion.”
Beholder’s career has been impressive to say the least. The 2013 Distaff champion won the 2012 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies last year. The three-year-old filly has won seven out of eleven races throughout her career.
In related news, the 2013 Breeders’ Cup Distaff brought in a total of $5,328,151 in wagering totals.
