Super Derby 2013; Superstar Departing Takes the Win

Superstar Departing won the Super Derby by four lengths on Saturday, September 7, 2013 at Louisiana Downs located in Bossier City in northwestern Louisiana. Departing and jockey Robby Alvarado dominated the 1 1/8 mile dirt race for three-year-olds with a $500,000 purse that drew a field of seven colts and geldings. Departing was the heavy favorite coming in with 3/10 odds for the 2013 Super Derby.

The 2006 Super Derby winner jockey Robbie Albarado broke from post position #7 in the 2013 Super Derby with winner Departing. Trainer Al Stall, Jr. reported before the big race that he was comfortable with the outside post and expected Departing to find a good stride and beat the two “speed horses” directly to the inside. Ruler of Love and Departing cruised effortlessly in the first half of the 2013 Super Derby. In the last stretch, Departing turned up the speed and inevitably beat Ruler of Love by four lengths with a time of 1:50.08.

Jockey Robby Alvarado stated, “They went a little slow in the first half, but sprinted home nice.”

Departing, owned by Claiborne Farm and Adele Dilschneider, has won six of his eight lifetime races including the West Virginia Derby resulting in a bankroll worth over $1 million.

Trainer Al Stall, Jr. reported that fans might expect to see Departing race again in the Oklahoma Derby on September 29th or the October 5th Indiana Derby. Stall also stated that the Breeders’ Cup Classic is on the table for Departing but he will take it one race at a time.

Second place Ruler of Love was the expert’s third favorite pick coming in with 6/1 odds for the 2013 Super Derby. Ruler of Love also finished 2nd behind Departing in the West Virginia Derby. The Joan Scott trained colt has only won twice in out of eleven lifetime races. The Florida horse will teamed up with Scott Spieth and broke from post position #5 finishing 2nd in the Super Derby.
