Preakness Stakes 2013: Departing

Preakness 2013 contender Departing.

Preakness 2013 contender Departing.

Departing is set and ready to give Orb some competition in the Preakness Stakes on Saturday May18, 2013 at Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore, Maryland. The Preakness Stakes is for three-year-old thoroughbred horses. The Preakness Stakes is run on a 1 3/16 mile dirt track with a $1 Million purse. The Preakness is the second jewel of the US Triple Crown taking place after the Kentucky Derby and before the Belmont Stakes.

Departing is a gelding that has only raced once as a two-year-old. His three-year-old career is extremely impressive to say the least. In the five races throughout his career, Departing has place first in four of them. In his only flawed race, Departing finished third behind Revolutionary and Mylute in the Louisiana Derby on March 30th.

Departing is owned and bred by Claiborne Farm and trained by Albert Stall. Jockey Brian Hernandez, Jr. will take the mount aboard Departing for the “Run for the Black-Eyed Susans.”

After a workout on the Churchill Downs track on Sunday May 12th, trainer Albert M. Stall, Jr. stated, “I wanted him to go a little slower the first part than the second part and he hit right on what we were looking for. He did enough to get the day off tomorrow. He is a gelding and doesn’t carry a lot of weight. He had galloped two miles on Thursday and a spirited mile and a half Friday.”

Departing is scheduled to work out at Churchill Downs on Tuesday (May 13th) and Wednesday (May 14th) before shipping to Baltimore on Wednesday afternoon at 2:00 PM EDT. The Departing team is expected to be in Baltimore just in time for the Wednesday afternoon 138th Preakness Stakes post position draw.

Albert M. Stall, Jr. and family are all very excited about Departing’s participation in the 2013 Preakness Stakes saying, “It is exciting and there is maybe more buildup to this than with Blame in the 2010 Breeders’ Cup Classic. My wife is from Baltimore and we are looking forward to a good time there and enjoying the race.”

Lady and The Track would like to wish Jockey Brian Hernandez, Jr., owner Claiborne Farm, Mrs. Stall, trainer Albert M. Stall, Jr., and the wildly fast Departing the best of luck in the 2013 Preakness Stakes. Good Luck! Safe Run!

The Preakness Stakes is set with a 6:20 PM EDT post time. Coverage begins at 4:30 PM EDT on NBC Sports. A Preakness pre-show will air on NBC Sports Network from 2:30-4:30 PM EDT and a post-show will air on NBC Sports Network from 6:30-7:00 PM EDT.
