Donn Handicap 2013: Post Positions & Odds

The 2013 Donn Handicap takes place this Saturday February 9th at Gulfstream Park. The 2012 Florida Derby winner and fan favorite Take Charge Indy, with 6/1 odds, is set to run against a few tough competitors in the GI $500,000 Don Handicap such as Flat Out, with 3/1 odds, and Bourbon Courage, with 8/1 odds.

Experts doubted Take Charge Indy after an injury took place at the 2012 Kentucky Derby that left him wounded. Take Charge Indy is back and better than ever placing third in the Fayette Stakes at Keeneland and then finishing second behind Shackleford in the 2012 Clark at Churchill Downs. Calvin Borel was Take Charge Indy’s jockey until a wrist fracture resulted in replacing him with John Velazquez. I was looking forward to watching the Calvin/TCI duo but feel maybe the jockey change is exactly what Take Charge Indy needs. I believe we haven’t seen the best of this dark brown beauty!

Take Charge Indy’s trainer Pat Byrne recently stated, “He’s been doing super. We’re looking forward to running him. It looks like a very tough race. They’re coming out of the woodwork for this race.”

The talented Pat Byrne is right about the cream of the crop “coming out of the woodwork.” The 2013 Donn Handicap is brimming with talented horses. Four-year-old Csaba, with 4/1 odds, is extremely comfortable on the Florida track and has won four straight races in a row. Bourbon Courage can keep up with the best of them. He held on strong in the Clark Handicap finishing third behind Take Charge Indy and Shackleford. Trainer Todd Pletcher will be on hand with Graydar, with 5/1 odds. If we learned anything last week it’s that gray horses run really fast! 

In addition the Donn Handicap on Saturday, fans will have the chance to see the 2011 Kentucky Derby champion Animal Kingdom run in the $300,000 Kitchen’s Joy Gulfstream Park Turf Handicap. This eighth race of the day will be Animal Kingdom’s first race of 2013 and last race in the United States. Other exciting races on Saturday February 9th include the $150,000 Suwannee River and the $150,000 Gulfstream Park Sprint. Post time for the 2013 Kitten’s Joy is at 4:01 PM EST.
