The Financial Gamble of High-End Leather Goods
Many believe that when fashion lovers label a purchase as an “investment,” they are merely justifying their spending habits. However, much like currency or real estate, the fashion industry also follows market dynamics, particularly in the realm of luxury leather goods. The significant financial implications involved demand careful decision-making, akin to purchasing property or making other financial investments.
The ideal investment? A bag whose market value appreciates over time and whose quality withstands the years without any compromise. With insights from experts and enthusiasts, the editorial team at Women’s Journal set out to determine which model offers the best profitability at the current moment: the one that is worth more today than yesterday but less than tomorrow, and that will yield a significant return if sold on the secondary market. Our focus was on the most coveted French luxury brands of the year, intentionally excluding Hermès, and we tested six renowned bag models based on several carefully chosen criteria. Among the Chanel 2.55, Lady Dior, Saddle, Louis Vuitton’s Speedy, Neverfull, and Capucines, if you had to choose one to invest in for life, which should it be?
The Iconic Lady Dior Claims the Top Spot
The iconic Lady Dior emerges as the top choice, tied with Chanel’s 2.55 at 18 points, but expert opinion from May Berthelot tips the scales in its favor. In early February, she explained that “after decades of growth, the resale value of Chanel bags is declining.” The reason? An outrageous increase in the prices of new bags (+106% since 2015), pushing them out of reach for many well-off consumers, but not wealthy enough to afford them.
With more bags available than there is demand, resale prices are logically doomed to decrease in order to regain attractiveness and recapture those who have lost interest. For now, purchasing new Chanel products is not advisable as you wouldn’t be able to leverage their desirability to sell them at a high price later. Meanwhile, the price of the Lady Dior has risen enough to create exclusivity, but in a more “measured” manner, preventing consumer disinterest (+87.6% over ten years).
Why Lady Dior Continues to Reign
Since 2004, Lady Dior has been the most searched model on Google, and it continues to stand out season after season as a staple in high-end leather goods. Gifted by Bernadette Chirac to Lady Di to showcase French craftsmanship, it certainly makes us proud: its timeless design, iconic Cannage stitching, and charming details are unmistakably appealing. There’s no doubt or confusion: Lady Dior remains the “Darling” of the luxury bag world. Its former name suits it perfectly, after all.
