Delicious Cod Fritters: Discover Portugal’s Pataniscas de Bacalhau!

Introduction to “Pataniscas”

Pataniscas are cod fritters that I really enjoy. Despite their simplicity, I had never tried making them myself. Since my children generally love fritters, I finally decided to introduce them to this Portuguese delicacy.

Ingredients

– 18 Fritters
– 3 Eggs
– 500 g Desalted Cod
– 1 Onion
– 1 Bunch of Parsley
– 2 Cloves of Garlic
– 120 g Flour
– 1 tsp Baking Powder
– 100 ml Milk
– Frying Oil
– A pinch of Salt
– A pinch of Pepper

Preparation

Total Time: 45 minutes
– Preparation: 30 minutes
– Cooking: 15 minutes

1. Cod Preparation

Start by cooking the pre-desalted cod pieces in simmering water for 8 to 10 minutes. Once cooked, remove the skin and bones and shred the cod into fine strips.

2. Mixing Ingredients

In a large mixing bowl, combine the shredded cod with eggs, roughly chopped onion, and freshly chopped parsley. Mix thoroughly. Crush the garlic cloves and add them to the bowl along with the flour and baking powder. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Pour in the milk and stir the mixture well.

3. Frying

Heat a generous amount of frying oil in a large skillet over high heat. Take large spoonfuls of the mixture and drop them into the hot oil. Fry the fritters for a few minutes on each side until they are golden brown. Once cooked, transfer the fritters to paper towels to drain any excess oil.

These delicious pataniscas can be served hot, and they make a delightful treat that captures the essence of traditional Portuguese cuisine. Enjoy your meal!
