Like Mother, Like Daughter
Just like Jane Birkin, Charlotte Gainsbourg has established herself as a true fashion icon. Carrying the weighty fashion legacy has helped her craft her unique style, centered around one key item.
Continuing the Legacy
Being the daughter of iconic figures in music and fashion—Serge Gainsbourg and Jane Birkin—Charlotte was destined for the spotlight. Now 54, the French-British star grew up surrounded by successful role models who continue to inspire the masses decades later.
Charlotte Gainsbourg epitomizes French fashion excellence, as clearly shown through her public appearances.
Developing Her Own Style Identity
While Charlotte has sculpted her own stylistic identity, embracing a chic Parisian spirit and an androgynous silhouette she now fully accepts, she spent much of her childhood aspiring to emulate her mother, Jane Birkin. A perpetual style icon, Jane Birkin has been at the forefront of fashion since the 1970s, and her youngest daughter has inevitably been influenced by her sartorial flair. On the show “Fashion Neurosis,” Charlotte shared her lifelong fashion admiration for her mother, starting from her earliest memories.
When asked by Bella Freud, the podcast host, about the first piece of clothing that captivated her as a child, the singer of “Deadly Valentine” immediately and almost instinctively responded, “I think it was, without a doubt, my mother’s jeans. Because I wanted to be her, really (…) and I was so far from it. My body shape was different. But she always made me feel beautiful. I tried wearing her jeans but they never fit me quite right.”
Inspired by Iconic Jeans
Among her favorite jeans, two styles stood out: “I can visualize my mother in the 70s when she wore these jeans. She had two different pairs. One of them, in the 70s, was flare, and it was so authentic. Also, in ‘Je t’aime moi non plus,’ the film my father made with her, she wore a very different style of jeans, and it looked so beautiful on her.”
A Lifelong Obsession with Denim
In what seems like a therapeutic session, she continues her heartfelt confessions, unfiltered: “Jeans are still an obsession for me today.” What she looks for most in this wardrobe staple? “The right color. The perfect mix of colors. There’s nothing better than having a raw denim jean and watching it evolve into a worn denim, all naturally.”
