Making your own wheat tortillas is not only cost-effective but also straightforward. While store-bought tortillas can be pricey, preparing them at home is a breeze. This recipe allows you to easily whip up your own soft tortillas using basic ingredients like flour, salt, and margarine, resulting in fluffy wraps that you can fill as desired. They are a delicious option for a quick meal or a picnic.
Ingredients
For 4 servings:
– **Tortilla**
– Flour: 225g
– Salt: 1 tsp
– Margarine: 25g
– Warm water: 125ml
– **Fillings**
– Green salad
– Tomatoes: 2
– Tuna: 2 cans
– Ham: 2 slices
– Carrots: 2
– Choice of sauces
Preparation
1. Start by sifting the flour and salt into a large mixing bowl (or the bowl of a stand mixer). Add the margarine and blend it in using your fingertips, quickly and gently. Gradually add the warm water (heated for 30 seconds in the microwave) while stirring with a fork (or using the dough hook on your mixer). Combine the dough into a ball and knead it on a work surface until smooth. Place it back in the bowl and let it rest under a cloth for 10 to 15 minutes.
2. Lightly flour a work surface and divide the dough into 8 to 10 equal pieces. Roll each piece out very thinly into circles of 15 to 20 cm in diameter, using a rolling pin. If the circles are not even, trim them with a knife using a large bowl as a guide.
3. Heat a non-stick skillet and once it is hot, cook the tortillas for 1 to 2 minutes on each side. They should be flexible enough to roll and have small brown spots. Keep them covered with a cloth on a plate so they remain moist yet flexible. Allow to cool in this manner.
To Finish
Fill the tortillas with your chosen ingredients, roll them tightly, and secure with a wooden pick if needed.
