Millionaire Baby; On Fire Baby wins La Troienne: On Fire Baby took the 29th running of the GI La Troienne on Kentucky Oaks Day, Friday, May 2, 2014 at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Kentucky. The five-year-old homebred became a millionaire after winning the 2014 La Troienne $200,713 payday. On Fire Baby has earned a total $1,082,687 throughout her career.
One Fire Baby, who is owned by Anita Cauley and trained by Gary Hartlage, came in 2nd behind Authenticity in the 2013 La Troienne Stakes. This year, On Fire Baby wasn’t going to let anyone win the race and with jockey Joe Johnson aboard, Baby was able to bring it home in 1:43.48 on the 1 1/16 mile dirt track.
Joe Johnson reported after the La Troienne win, “She broke well. We wanted to be in a stalking position. Her last race was a good one. She was second to Close Hatches and we had given her a run for the money that day. She showed today that she is among the best. She is so gutsy.”
Trainer Gary Hartlage stated, “I looked at the race not as Gary Hartlage because in my mind she’s always going to win. I thought the five (Devil’s Cave) would be on the lead and we would be stalking her. Joe (Johnson) had to get into her to keep up. Joe did a super job riding her. He asked her and she went on. I’ve always thought she was one of the top horses in the country and hopefully she showed that today.”
