Holy Bull 2014: Winner Cario Prince

Cairo Prince proves the odds right with a win at the 2014 Holy Bull. Cairo Prince, a three year old colt, who is trained by Kiaran McLaughlin, was the favorite going into the 2014 Miller Lite Holy bull at Gulfstream Park with 2/1 odds; and Cairo Prince proved everyone right as he took home the win and the $400,000 purse.

The 2014 Holy Bull Stakes was a Grade 2 race and is one of the first major races to test out the prospects for three year olds for the upcoming Kentucky Derby, and Cairo Prince proved that he is off to a good start for the Kentucky Derby trail as the 2014 Holy Bull proved to be a pretty easy win. Coup de Grace and Almost Famous set the pace early on in the race, and Cairo Prince was able to stalk the pace setters all down the backstretch and then he and jockey Luis Saez put themselves in prime position to take the lead and eventually ride past the leaders of the pack down the top of the stretch for the win.

Cairo Prince won with a considerable lead over second place contender Conquest Titan with a 5 ¾ length distance between himself and second place holder Conquest Titan. Cairo Prince posted a time of 1:42.16 in the 1 1/16 mile race. This time was just .42 seconds over the track standard, which is held by River Seven. Intense Holiday followed in third place and Almost Famous, who was an early pace setter, came in fourth place.

McLauglin had confidence in Cairo Prince coming into this year’s Holy Bull. McLaughlin reported to DRF, “We felt we had the best horse, and we’re marching on…He trains exceptionally well, and he’s got a great mind. A lot of times, you don’t get those two things in the same package.”

McLaughlin isn’t decided yet on when Cairo Prince will run again, he could run in the Fountain of Youth or the Florida Derby, but either way, the win at Holy Bull generated excitement for Cairo Prince leading to the Kentucky Derby.
