In her first start of 2014, three-year-old filly Fierce Boots held off the field of eight in the 41st running of the Busanda Stakes, an official prep race of the Kentucky Oaks. The Todd Pletcher trained filly “hustled from the start” and cut a corner to ensure her finish time of 1:46.52 on the one-mile and 70 yards inner track at Aqueduct.

The Bay Filly Fierce Boots by Tiznow was foaled in Kentucky in May of 2011 and raced four times in 2013 at four different tracks. Fierce boots celebrated only one win at Parx Racing on August 31, 2013. In 2014, Fierce Boots is off to a great start down the Kentucky Oaks Trail!

Jockey Jose L. Ortiz was on the mount for the exciting Busanda Stakes win at Aqueduct and reported, “She broke well, so I put her on the lead. She went very relaxed and just kept trying.”

Trainer Todd Pletcher’s Busanda victory with filly Fierce Boots was bittersweet. Pletcher’s team lost one of their favorite horses in a tragic accident Saturday morning where Caixa Eletronica met his demise while colliding with Six Drivers who unseated his rider and was loose and galloping free. Both horses died instantly. Caixa Eletronica was a graded Stakes winner loved by many and will be greatly missed. Todd Pletcher’s assistant Byron Hughes reported that the 2014 Busanda Stakes win at Aqueduct helped raise Pletcher’s spirits but said the trainer was still heartbroken.
