In 2012, Groupie Doll won the $400,200 Presque Isle Downs Masters Stakes and set a track record and gained a title as champion female sprinter of 2012. So far, Groupie Doll has earned $1,908,850, with 10 wins, 4 seconds, and 3 thirds in 19 starts. Groupie Doll made her 2013 debut on August 10th in the one-mile Gardenia Stakes (gr. III) at Ellis Park, where she finished 3rd, beaten by a length.
Last year, Groupie Doll won the Filly and Mare Sprint but due to a disappointing 3rd place finish at Stakes racing at Keenland’s Thoroughbred Club of America, some are questioning Groupie Doll, though trainer “Buff” told the Courier Journal, “Her last race, I take a bit of the blame because I told Rajiv (Maragh) to get her in the race a little earlier since it’s only six furlongs. We were worried about that because she drops so far back normally. I think in the Breeders’ Cup she’ll get to run her race, because it’s seven furlongs.”
As far as strategy goes for the upcoming Breeders’ Cup, “Buff” says that the game plan is to let her run her race and not try to force her to do too much and I think she’ll run well.”
Groupie Doll will be sold at Keenland four days after the Filly and Mare Sprint, as her owners cite expenses as a reason to sell, but Groupie Doll is still a unique horse; “You think most of the time the heavy heads have the big horses,” Bradley said. “But I think what makes her popular, or our stable popular, is that people in these other barns — who aren’t Baffert or Lukas or Pletcher — see they are able to maybe take a horse to the Breeders’ Cup. It gives a lot of people hope.”
The 2013 Breeders’ Cup World Championship takes place on Friday November 1st and Saturday November 2nd. The Filly & Mare Sprint will take place on Saturday with a 1:21 PM PDT post time.
