Shopping For The Horse Lover In Your Family Made Easy

By LATT Staff

Everyone has someone in their life who is, for lack of a better way to put it, just hard to buy gifts for, and nothing could be truer about horse lovers and equestrians as a group. Whether it be birthdays or Christmas and Hanukkah, sometimes finding the perfect gift for an equine enthusiast is like finding the proverbial needle in a haystack.

And this year, with so many teetering perilously on the verge of closing their doors thanks to the Covid-19 pandemic, we decided that it would be a good idea to suggest businesses run by equestrians and horse lovers that may not be actual horse-related gifts, as well the standard recommendation of businesses that offer gifts which cater to equestrians and horse lovers.

Chewy Has Something For Everyone

First off, there’s everyone’s favorite pet supply delivery service Chewy, who just so happens to be one of our affiliates here at LATT. Chewy was started in 2011 and is now a publicly held company owned by PetsMart and despite the large corporate ownership now, it is still well-known for its exceptional customer service and attention to detail. Plus, their free shipping offer on all orders of $50 or more, especially during the holiday season, is always a bonus and can’t be beat.

In addition to the plethora of food, supplies, toys and treats for cats and dogs, and all kinds of gifts for their humans, Chewy also offers a wide variety of equine supplies and gifts as well — saddles, saddle pads, halters, first aid and wellness items, joint health, hoof care, feed, treats and toys. And many of the horse industry’s top brands are offered. To go straight to the horse supplies page, click here.

Pillows, Pillowcases & More

Tammy Dennis, a former racehorse owner and longtime racing fan, operates a small custom sewing business specializing in pillows, pillowcases, grocery bags, plastic bag holders, hair scrunchies and draft stoppers. Prices and shipping vary, but she can find just about any fabric (most are 100 percent cotton) and design, and shipping is reasonable but varies depending on location. Dennis is located in North Carolina and can be reached via her business Facebook page at Tammy’s Custom Made Pillow Cases and More.

Mask Up!

Masks to prevent the spread of Covid-19 have become mandatory for all of us around the world these days and, therefore, have become a standard accessory. Several resourceful people have launched their own mask-making business and one in particular has given horse racing lovers and fans, as well as equestrians of all disciplines, a number of unique choices. She can also make custom masks for the non-equestrian/horse lover in the family. Maddie Hurm and her beautiful mask collection can be found on Instagram at @madeleinethemaskmaker. And the best part is that her masks are $5 each, plus shipping.

Not Your Typical Jams & Jellies

And who doesn’t like jams, jellies and marmalades? While not a gift designed specifically for the horse lover in mind, The Wild Pear is owned by equestrians and located in Northern California. From the basic flavors, like cherry and apricot and black currant to some of the more exotic flavors like pear, guava and mango, the company really does offer a flavor for everyone. There are spicy choices, like pineapple and jalapeno and pineapple and habanero, peppered pomegranate, and also sugar free varieties for those who watch their sugar intake. And you can’t go wrong with the apple butters and cranberry choices for the holidays. Shipping on jars of 12 or more within the continental United States is currently free, too.

A Racing Story Too Good Not To Be Told

For the reader in the horse racing family, horseplayer and adventurer Mark Paul wrote a fun personal account of one of his own experiences in the late 1980s, the true crime story revolving around his friends, a horse, the Mexican drug cartel and the Kentucky Derby. Without giving any of the story away, it’s a fun and interesting read and an exciting page turner. “The Greatest Gambling Story Ever Told” can be found on Amazon, is already a bestseller and ordered in hardcover, paperback or digitally for Kindle and iPad or Audio. And you can visit the author’s personal webpage for more info and details, as well as links to his blog and podcast: https://markpaulauthor.com/
