The 141st running of the Preakness Stakes is thirteenth race of the day on a fourteen race card with a post time of 6:45 p.m. ET. NBC will begin coverage of the Preakness Stakes at Pimlico Race Course at 5:00 p.m. ET. The 2016 Preakness Stakes is the middle jewel of the Triple Crown and is worth $1,500,000. Trained by Doug O’Neill and owned by Reddam Racing, Nyquist remains undefeated after winning the Kentucky Derby on May 7, 2016. Jockey Mario Gutierrez has ridden Nyquist to victory eight times so far, including the Sentient Jet Breeders’ Cup Juvenile, FrontRunner Stakes, San Vicente Stakes and the Florida Derby. Mario Gutierrez teams up with Nyquist once again for the second jewel of the Triple Crown.
Saturday’s forecast for the Preakness Stakes currently calls for 100% chance of rain. Projected rainfall is expected to reach one-inch under cloudy skies for most of the day. Trainer Doug O’Neill recently reported that he isn’t worried about the rain or how Nyquist will behave in it.
“I don’t think it’ll affect him in a negative way,” O’Neill said. “You got to be sure-footed to do what he’s done at all the different tracks. We got a wet track there at Gulfstream. That didn’t seem to affect him in a negative way, so I don’t see it as a negative.
The morning of the Preakness post position draw, Nyquist jogged the Pimlico track in preparation for the big day.
“The morning went great. As planned, we jogged him two miles. I sound like a broken record – great energy, he looked great,” said trainer Doug O’Neill, whose stable star jogged two miles in the company of a pony. “We’re just looking for him to continue what he’s been doing since he’s been in Baltimore and just keep his appetite up and stay injury-free and stay loose. I’m very happy.”
Eleven horses will line up in the Pimlico starting gate for the Preakness Stakes including Nyquist, Exaggerator, Cherry Wine, Laoban, Collected, Fellowship, Uncle Lino, Awesome Speed, Lani, Stradivari and Abiding Star.
Last year, Triple Crown winner American Pharoah won the 2015 Preakness Stakes from post position number one.
