2013 was the year Groupie Doll denied one of the best female sprinters a title in the Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Sprint: Judy the Beauty. What a beauty she is! Wesley Ward owns and trains the mare. He has had confidence at every stage with this mare, and 2014 was Wesley Ward and Judy the Beauty’s turn!

With a strong field of the fastest fillies and mares in the country, Judy the Beauty went to post as the favorite. After sitting back after Stonetastic took off straight from the gate, Judy the Beauty looked a winner at every stage. Avoiding the fast pace a bit when Mike Smith took her back to tracking the speed, he moved the mare around the turn and let her loose.

At the head of the stretch, Judy the Beauty was a force that no one could hold off. Passing the speed coming into stretch, Judy the Beauty took another challenge on. Better Lucky ran probably her best career race, only to fall short by a head to the Ward trainee.

Jockey Mike Smith reported after the 2014 Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Sprint, “Absolutely dynamite. I couldn’t have asked for a better trip. Almost every step of it, except for almost getting caught. She broke extremely well which at times can be very crucial for her because sometimes she gets away really bad. I was happy about that; one of the best she’s ever left the gate. We saw that work at Keeneland. We knew she was ready.”

Trainer Wesley Ward reported from Florida by phone, “She just digs down deep in her soul. That was amazing. Very few horses run with as much heart as she does. She just has a desire to win. She will head back to Kentucky. I had thought about retiring her, but there is no doubt that Keeneland is absolutely her favorite track. I just want to give her another chance to win at her home track. I’m just elated with this whole weekend.”

Judy the Beauty may not be done yet. Ward has kept the mare in top form, and with Mike Smith finally getting the mount, the mare finally have gotten figured out, as Ward calls her a “quirky filly to ride.” For the world of horse racing, here is to hoping Judy the Beauty can come back next year just as strong!
