Before two emerging talents took center stage at Aqueduct this Saturday, it was Carson’s Run who captured the first graded-stakes victory of the day. Amid a weekend teeming with pivotal races that could affect the Breeders’ Cup lineup, a colt with seemingly no plans to compete at next month’s championship might just be the headline-maker.
In an era when the racing industry is desperate for uplifting stories, Carson’s Run has emerged as a beacon of hope.
Belmont at Big A: Stakes Success for Carson’s Run
Not long since the retirement of beloved champion Cody’s Wish and his touching bond with a young supporter, another inspiring narrative is unfolding with Carson’s Run, a formidable contender on the turf.
Wade Jost approached Terry Finley last year with a special request to honor his son, Carson. Grateful for the opportunity, Finley, the head of West Point Thoroughbreds, was eager to accommodate. Jost became a partner in the 2023 group, and Finley named a promising young chestnut colt after his former classmate’s son.
Now nine races into his career, the colt has risen to prominence as one of the top turf horses in the U.S. His talent was on full display again this past Saturday at the Big A, where Carson’s Run delivered a remarkable performance, securing a win in the Grade 3, $500,000 Jockey Club Derby Invitational.
Carson Jost, born with the rare genetic condition Wolf-Hirschhorn syndrome, relies on a wheelchair and has significant communication difficulties.
A progeny of Cupid and out of the mare Hot N Hectic by Henny Hughes, the colt was acquired for $170,000 at last spring’s Ocala Breeders’ Sales for 2-year-olds in training.
The team at West Point and co-owner Steven Bouchey had high hopes that he would develop into a strong competitor, and Carson’s Run has exceeded those expectations.
Under the guidance of trainer Christophe Clément and jockey Dylan Davis, the favored horse lagged behind the pack for most of the 1 3/8-mile race on grass. Making a bold move in the stretch, Carson’s Run unleashed a powerful sprint, swiftly moving from last to first, ultimately winning by three-quarters of a length ahead of his accomplished stablemate, Deterministic.
.
Davis, who has ridden Carson’s Run in all three of his graded-stakes wins, including two Grade 1 victories at the 2023 Summer Stakes at Woodbine and the Saratoga Derby Invitational, expressed his admiration for the colt.
“It’s just amazing,” Davis remarked. “There’s no doubt about it. I’m thrilled each time, and he’s an exceptional horse. It’s a privilege to ride him from the start, and chasing down such competitors is exhilarating.
“He’s incredibly special to me. He’s among my top mounts, and I often get emotional seeing him perform at his best. I just focus on enjoying this incredible ride.”
With his victory at the Jockey Club Derby, Carson’s Run has now won five of his nine starts, including this year’s listed Tale of the Cat Stakes at Monmouth Park. His earnings have soared to $1,574,629 with this latest win.
While Clément has yet to decide where Carson’s Run will race next, he mentioned the Hollywood Derby (G1) on November 30 at Del Mar as a possible next step.
This upcoming race would be his first in California and involves a shorter distance of nine furlongs. Having clinched four stakes victories at four different tracks over various distances, Carson’s Run has shown he’s versatile and resilient.
Regarded by many as the best three-year-old turf horse in the country, Carson’s Run is achieving far more than just accumulating wins. His impact on a wide audience, particularly on young Carson Jost and his family, is profoundly significant.
Whatever the future holds, we’ll be watching and cheering for both Carson and Carson’s Run.
