Following the trend of minimalist footwear, this summer marks a clear pivot towards more expressive, bountiful, and notably nostalgic sneakers. The French have made their choice: they are gravitating towards models that tell a story.
The data is unmistakable. In the past month, Google searches for “trendy sneakers” have skyrocketed by 220%. This surge coincides with the annual summer wardrobe refresh and also reflects a real dilemma: with so many contenders vying for the title of this summer’s top sneaker, how does one choose? To sort through the competition, JD Sports analyzed Google search data, TikTok popularity, and sales trends on their website.
The results are in: the New Balance 9060 takes the top spot with an impressive score of 93.8 out of 100. The statistics are telling, with 135,000 monthly searches on Google and a sales increase of 185%. This success is no fluke. With its chunky, intricately designed sole and lines borrowed from early 2000s runners, the New Balance 9060 has the unique ability to complement any outfit, whether it’s raw denim jeans, wide-leg trousers, or sportswear.
This triumph indicates a broader shift. Yesterday’s performance running shoes have transformed into genuine fashion statements. Close behind in popularity are the ASICS GEL-NYC and the Saucony Omni 9, both models featuring overtly technical appearances without seeming like they’ve just come off a run. Layered materials, visible cushioning, and meticulous finishes are enough to give character to an otherwise simple silhouette.
It’s impossible to discuss this season without mentioning the 2000s obsession. The Y2K nostalgia continues to dominate, with the GEL-NYC serving as a prime example, showcasing silver touches and breathable mesh. This same vibe permeates other models like the GEL-1130, GEL-Kayano 14, and the New Balance 740. The styling tip is straightforward: these bulky models pair well with loose clothing, such as baggy jeans or generous cuts that play on contrasts.
However, not everyone is on board with bulky designs. Tied for fifth place, the PUMA Speedcat and the adidas Samba advocate a different philosophy: that of sleekness. The former, with its flat sole and streamlined look derived from motorsport, and the latter, with its timeless simplicity, where retro-running shoes enhance the silhouette, these low-profile models refine it and blend perfectly with straight-leg pants, cropped pants, or a skirt.
Is It Necessary to Pick a Side?
Not necessarily, according to Cécilia Vivaldi, head of e-commerce at JD Sports. “Consumers don’t necessarily choose between these two trends; they create a wardrobe where each has its place,” she notes. In other words, the summer of 2026 won’t crown a single silhouette: between retro volume and sleek lines, the real trend is having options.
