Unexpectedly Stylish
Every year, the esteemed New York Times releases its list of the most stylish figures from the past twelve months. For the 2025 edition, 67 individuals from a variety of fields have been recognized by fashion experts as true pioneers of style. From cinema and music to sports and politics, these individuals have “shaped the contours of style and self-expression” with overwhelming success. While some names like ASAP Rocky, Jennifer Lawrence, and Carrie Bradshaw were anticipated, others have been quite a surprise, including a particular political figure whose inclusion has been notably striking.
Assuming office on May 8, 2025, this individual is known for his highly regulated and strict dress code. Occasionally, he wears red but predominantly dresses in white. His iconic headgear, known as the “calotte” or “zucchetto,” is a staple accessory that completes his outfit. Essential elements of his wardrobe also include the cassock and the mozzetta, a cape and/or short cloak that covers the shoulders. The unexpected twist in the 2025 ranking is the inclusion of Pope Leo XIV – born Robert Francis Prevost – among the best-dressed personalities.
The first American in history to hold this position, Pope Leo XIV has also made his mark in the fashion history books, according to the New York daily. Fashion journalists commend his boldness in incorporating more casual and relaxed accessories into a traditionally formal attire. The New York Times specifically highlights how “Chicago native Robert Francis Prevost has made a lasting impression by sporting a Chicago White Sox cap (he is a big fan) along with his pontifical garments.”
A Fashionable Influence
This choice, initially surprising, gains significance when viewed in light of current societal trends. Alongside artists like Rosalia (also praised by the magazine), the Pope inadvertently catalyzes the ongoing “Nun Mania” trend that is currently sweeping the fashion world. Moreover, long before it became fashionable, the pontiff was already donning Pantone’s Color of the Year for 2026: “Cloud Dancer.” This showcases his status as a true trendsetter.
