In November 2023, while on the RTL show “Laissez-vous tenter,” Adjani opened up about her fashion decision.
The smoked lenses aren’t just a nod to singer Serge Gainsbourg, with whom she co-wrote the 1984 hit “Pull Marine.” For Adjani, sunglasses are a means of concealment. “I’ve been wearing smoked glasses since I was 16, out of shyness. Then, it became a kind of addictive accessory to obviously protect myself, symbolically. It doesn’t actually protect anything. Probably because what I feel is so visibly reflected on my face and in my eyes. I don’t always want that to be detectable,” she explained during the radio interview. “There’s a sort of modesty, and even embarrassment. Celebrity and being known is very embarrassing. It’s not a pleasant attribute for the soul,” she continued.
From square to round, XXL to petite, Isabelle Adjani has an extensive collection of sunglasses and doesn’t hesitate to sport them at every opportunity, such as at the Chloé runway show during Paris Fashion Week in March 2025.
