A group of teenagers enjoying a horse-riding activity near Lake Bourdon in Moutiers-en-Puisaye, Yonne, faced a sudden and frightening turn of events when a stray dog unexpectedly appeared, leading to a series of accidents that sent five of them to the hospital.
The Incident: A Leisurely Ride Interrupted
The incident occurred on the afternoon of Saturday, August 10, 2024. Thirteen teenagers, all between the ages of 13 and 16, were participating in an equestrian activity organized by a youth center from Nièvre. What was meant to be a peaceful ride along the scenic lakeside quickly turned dangerous when, around 4 p.m., a stray dog suddenly emerged and startled the horses.
The unexpected arrival of the dog caused several of the horses to rear up, leading to at least five of the teenagers being thrown from their saddles.
Immediate Response and Medical Care
Emergency services from Yonne were quickly dispatched to the scene to assist the injured teenagers. Given the severity of the situation, a doctor was flown in by helicopter to provide rapid medical attention. The five injured teenagers were then transported by ambulance to the hospital in Auxerre for further evaluation and treatment.
A Close Call
While horse-riding is generally a safe and enjoyable activity, this incident highlights the unpredictable nature of working with animals and the importance of maintaining control in unexpected situations. Fortunately, prompt medical care was available, and the quick response of the emergency services likely prevented more serious injuries.
