Black lace dresses, corsets, and long leather jackets… Do these items remind you of a trend? Indeed, most of us have tried them out at some point in our lives.
Ever-Evolving Fashion Trends
As each fall season approaches, it brings its own set of fashion trends. Some are recurring favorites, like office wear, while others are unique to a particular year. This year, the resurgence of a style has been significantly influenced by a television series.
The Netflix hit series, “Wednesday,” which follows the escapades of the Addams Family’s eldest daughter, has made quite a stir. Although the first season, released in 2022, had already slightly influenced fashion, it’s the recent release of the second season that has firmly established a trend: the Goth Girl Autumn.
The Gothic Lifestyle
More than just a fleeting trend, the gothic style is a lifestyle that originated in the 1970s and 1980s. Born from the rock scene, with bands like Bauhaus, Joy Division, Flesh For Lulu, The Cure, and Siouxsie and the Banshees, this style was hugely popular and embodied a departure from social norms.
Today, it’s the character Wednesday, with her fascination with death and all things dark and gloomy, who has brought this black wardrobe back into fashion. However, last year, it was the movie “Nosferatu,” starring Lily-Rose Depp, that reignited the trend. Following its release, fashion houses added a gothic touch to their collections. Dior, for instance, showcased corsets, crinoline dresses, and various gothic accessories in its Spring-Summer 2025 Haute Couture collection. Valentino, Jean Paul Gaultier, and Schiaparelli have also embraced this style.
Gothic Peak This Autumn
This fall, the gothic trend has reached its peak, which is why it’s not surprising to find an exhibition on Rick Owens, a designer known for this aesthetic, at the Palais Galliera in Paris. The flexible payment platform, Klarna, has also noticed this trend. They’ve observed an 85% increase in sales of cross-shaped rings and a 120% increase in cross earrings. In terms of clothing, sales of fishnet bodysuits have risen by 86%, and corset sales by 43%.
“This fall 2025 shows that gothic fashion is no longer a niche market: it’s a cultural and creative phenomenon that appeals to all generations,” stated Karin Haglund, Head of Consumer Insights at Klarna.
