In the realm of apparel, certain items captivate audiences and individuals who, at first glance, seem worlds apart. One such item is a jacket that has charmed both royalty and action movie heroes alike. British royalty, including Lady Diana, Kate Middleton, Camilla Parker-Bowles, and Meghan Markle, have all been seen sporting this jacket, each in their own unique way, often during woodland strolls. The film industry has also embraced it, featuring it on actors like Sylvester Stallone in Rambo, Mark Wahlberg in Shooter, and Jason Statham in The Transporter. Its military origins are what made it a star in these blockbuster hits.
Originally designed by the U.S. military to be worn by soldiers during World War II, the “M65 Field Jacket,” also known as the “green jacket” or “military jacket,” was later distributed among the civilian population, inadvertently setting a trend that became universal. Later, Vietnam War protesters adopted it as a subversive symbol to express their dissent against the state.

Identifiable by its olive-green color, straight cut, and four large pockets at the chest and hips, this jacket is unmistakable. It surged in popularity in the 2010s but eventually faded from the fashion radar. However, Millennials have never really forgotten it.
Fashion-forward individuals from this generation wore it to festivals paired with skinny jeans, thigh-high boots, round John Lennon-style sunglasses, and a Fedora hat when Coachella was at its peak. Today, it’s making a comeback in the fashion scene, much to the delight of those nostalgic for the style.
The Driving Force Behind Its Revival
Interestingly, no fashion house is credited with its resurgence; instead, it’s the fashion enthusiasts on the streets who are bringing it back. This fashion rebellion started during the 2024 Fashion Weeks in Paris and Milan and has continued into the new year. The reason? The internet trend “2026 is the new 2016,” which brings back popular items from that decade. Additionally, the current sociopolitical climate may also be inspiring fashion rebels to pull their M65 jackets out of the closet as a statement of sartorial rebellion.
