Woodbine Entertainment announced that the wagering handle for its King’s Plate race card reached US$8.6 million, contributing to a total of US$18.2 million over the three-day event last weekend.

Following an unprecedented deluge that led to the rescheduling of The King’s Plate on Aug. 17, the 165th edition of the race took place to the delight of numerous fans on a Friday afternoon at Woodbine Racetrack.

The choice to hold the King’s Plate on Friday was made after careful consideration of the racing and simulcast schedule for the upcoming weekend, aiming to optimize wagering activity throughout the period.

The 165th King’s Plate saw the victory of the filly Caitlinhergrtness, owned by Siena Farm and WinStar Farm, trained by Kevin Attard, and ridden by jockey Rafael Hernandez.

“Despite nature’s initial interruption last weekend, Friday offered perfect conditions for The King’s Plate, and the races were exceptional,” stated Woodbine CEO Michael Copeland. “The success of this event could not have been achieved without the immense support from our fans, participants, and the entire team at Woodbine.”

Due to the severe rainfall cutting the original King’s Plate card short, Woodbine issued refunds to ticket holders and allowed free entry to Friday’s rescheduled race.

Woodbine managed a handle of US$4.7 million on Saturday’s card, which coincided with the Travers Stakes day at Saratoga. Similarly, Sunday’s live racing also saw US$4.7 million in bets.

The 2024 Thoroughbred racing season at Woodbine will continue until December 15, featuring several significant events, including Turf Champions Day on Saturday, Sept. 14.
