Royal Family’s Hat Affair
When it comes to hats, the British royal family is in a league of its own. They frequently showcase stunning headwear at various events, adhering to a specific dress code. Sophie, Countess of Wessex, also known as Sophie of Edinburgh, is no exception. Her philosophy? The more extravagant, the better.
To add the perfect finishing touch to an elegant outfit, it’s rare to see Prince Edward’s wife without some headgear. Her hats range from classic to oversized, numbering in the hundreds, and are often designed by Irish designer Philip Treacy or Jane Taylor Millinery.
Her collection includes wide-brimmed printed hats, straw models, headpieces adorned with a bouquet of flowers, a beige felt fedora, Jackie Kennedy-style pillbox hats, majestic wide-brimmed hats, bow-adorned fascinators, and others decorated with feathers, lace, or delicate veils. The larger they are, the better for Countess Sophie of Wessex! This fashion habit is likely inspired by her mother-in-law, Queen Elizabeth II, who turned hats into a symbol of her supreme elegance.
According to the BBC, a protocol established in 1952 dictates that women of the British royal family should never attend public events without a hat. The reason? It was considered improper for them to show their hair in public at the time.
Since then, this fashion item has continued to hold a prominent place in the wardrobes of the elite. This is evident not only in the looks of Sophie of Wessex but also in those of Kate Middleton, Maxima of the Netherlands, and Caroline of Monaco, among others.
