Travers Stakes 2014 Events & Mid-Summer Derby Fashion: This year marks the 144th Travers Stakes at Saratoga Race Course. Travers Day is also known as Saratoga’s “Mid-Summer Derby,” and it is one of America’s oldest stakes race for thoroughbreds. The race will be held on Saturday, August 23, 2014. The gates will open as early as 7:00 AM, with an early post time at 11:35 AM. General Admission is $10 per person and Clubhouse Admission is $15 per person and parking is $10 for trackside parking. What to do on Travers Day…

Mid-Summer Derby goers are welcome to come early and enjoy breakfast at the Saratoga on Saturday. A breakfast buffet will be served from 7:00 am-9:30 am and it costs $17.95 per adult and $9.95 per child ages 3-12. Track goers are also invited to bring their own breakfast and picnic on the benches at the rail. Early race goers can also enjoy a tram tour at the race course. There is a free 45 minute tram and walking tour of the historic Backstretch area.

You are also welcome to bring your own bottle of wine to enjoy on Travers Day, just be sure to transfer your vino into a plastic container. There will be Travers Day festivals activities throughout the week including a wine and cheese tasting and a fashion show, but specifically on Saturday Saratoga will feature their regular Lord & Taylor Fashion Saturday. Race patrons are invited to come out in their race day best and have a chance to win prizes from Lord & Taylor. Two winners will receive a $250 Lord & Taylor gift card and they can even win a chance to present a trophy in the winner’s circle during the 2014 Saratoga meet.

What to wear on Travers Day…

Since Travers Day is one of the biggest races of the close of the summer season and since it is reminiscent of traditional Derby racing, try out classic lady like summer looks. This doesn’t mean that you have to look boring or can’t stay out, just keep to traditional lady like summer silhouettes, such as full skirted dresses and skirts and lady like hats. This is not the best time for a fascinator, go all out in an actual hat on Travers Day. Stay away from casual maxi dresses or jersey fabric. Florals and lady like details like lace and more open boat neck style collars also carry the feel of classic race wear and are still fashion forward and stylish. Try a beautiful lace collared green dress. It is classic and lady like but the bottom hem keeps the silhouette interesting. Another great choice is a polka dot dress. Polka dots are always considered lady like and classic. If you like a little bit of bling or embellishment to compliment your lady like look try a beautiful aqua dress with embellishment detailing. Pair your lady like dresses with a classic nude peep toe pump. You can also add lady like touches with your hat as well. Try a delicate pink and yellow topper or if you want a bolder touch and still look lady like try the bright azure hat supplied by fashion at the Races.

From breakfasts to the fashion contest to the big race, you will have plenty to enjoy at Saratoga and you will be looking like a true lady!
