It was a busy morning in Kentucky as a number of Breeders’ Cup contenders worked at both Churchill Downs in Louisville and at Keeneland in Lexington. Monomoy Girl, the winner of the 2018 Distaff, led the way under regular rider Florent Geroux and posted a five-furlong move in 1:01 in company with Dirt Mile contender Owendale.

“She’s a champion mare and really a horse of a lifetime,” Geroux said. “She’s a future Hall of Famer with her résumé. The speed figures show she is a little bit faster this year than her 3-year-old year.”

Saturday also marked the final moves for the works Bret Calhoun-trained trio of By My Standards, Mr. Money and Silver Dust. By My Standards is headed to the Classic, while the other two are set to run in the Dirt Mile.

“(By My Standards and Mr. Money) both worked awesome this morning,” jockey Gabriel Saez, who was aboard both, said. “By My Standards was supposed to be in about 1:01 but I couldn’t slow him down. He’s just doing really, really good. Mr. Money got over the ground great again, too.”

Also working at Churchill on Saturday for the Classic was Sagamore Farm’s Global Campaign, who won he Woodward Stakes (G1) in his most recent start, longshot Title Ready and grade 1 winner Tom’s d’Etat.

Preakness Stakes (G1) winner Swiss Skydiver posted five furlongs in 1:00 under jockey Robby Albarado. Trainer Kenny McPeek indicated the daughter of Daredevil will likely enter the Distaff and a face a showdown with Monomoy Girl, who has just one loss (and another one by a DQ after a win) in her 12-race career.

At Keeneland, Sackatoga Stable’s Belmont Stakes winner Tiz the Law went five furlongs in :59.20 and galloped out six furlongs in 1:12.20 under exercise rider Heather Smullen.

“I saw just what I wanted. He went perfectly,” trainer Barclay Tagg said. “We wanted him to go in :59 and he went in :59.20 so it was just right. I thought he needs to get a good feel of this track (because) he has never run over it.”

The only remaining Breeders’ Cup contenders left to work at Churchill Downs are Just Might and Manny Wah. Both will work on Sunday, according to their respective trainers.

At Santa Anita, Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert sent out three of his six Breeders’ Cup entries, including Kentucky Derby winner Authentic, who logged five furlongs in :59.60 before the sun came up. Distaff contender Gamie went in :59.40 and Maximum Security, also headed to the Classic, posted a time of 1:00.60 for five furlongs.

Last year’s Turf runner-up United, set for a return in this year’s 1 ½-mile grass feature, went 1:15 for trainer Richard Mandella.

Entries for all 14 Breeders’ Cup races will take place on Monday. All horses are required to be on the grounds at Keeneland on Wednesday.
