Celebrating Opening Day at Del Mar Thoroughbred Club: The summer racing season is officially underway, and this Thursday, July 16, Del Mar will be celebrating its Opening Day. Del Mar’s fashionable season begins Thursday and ends on Monday, September 7, 2015. The summer meet at Del Mar features five Breeders’ Cup “Win and You’re In” Challenge races including the Bing Crosby Stakes, the Clement L. Hirsch Handicap, the Pat O’Brien Stakes, the Del Mar Handicap and the TVG Pacific Classic. The Oceanside Stakes kick off opening day at Del Mar alongside the popular Opening Day Party.

First up, there is the Opening Day Hat contest at Del Mar. Sign up between 11:30 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. and you could win up to $5,000 in total prizes. Creativity wins this contest! The sign-up area is at the Plaza de Mexico, which is located inside the Stretch Run admission gates. There are five categories: Most Glamourous, Best Racing Theme, Funniest/Most Outrageous, Best Fascinator, and Flowers/All Other. There is no fee to participate, and all entries will receive two free admission passes to return to the races. Winners in each category win $300 and a $100 Studio Savvy gift certificate for first place while second place wins $200 and third place wins $100. The Bing Crosby Grand Prize winner receives a Harrah’s Resort Southern California Luxury Resort Escape with a two-night stay in a hotel suite along with a $200 meal credit and a $200 spa credit, providing a total value of $1,300.

There will also be a big Opening Day Party to get festivities going during opening day at Del Mar. Tickets cost $30 per person and include Stretch Run Admission and exclusive access to The Party. This also includes the Red Bull Tour Bus with music provided by world class DJs, gourmet food trucks, a beer garden and cocktail bar, photo booths, prize giveaways and interactive activities, jumbo video boards, private wagering, and limited first-come, first-serve shaded seating.
