Kentucky Derby 2015 Contender American Pharoah

Kentucky Derby 2015 Contender American Pharoah: Kentucky Derby runner-ups are seemingly becoming better and better stallions. Hard Spun finished in the money in the 2007 Kentucky Derby, and has broken through as a very good stallion. Another example of a breakthrough sire is the young Pioneerof the Nile. Pioneerof the Nile was runner up to 50-1 shot Mine That Bird in the 2009 Kentucky Derby. Entering stud in 2010, the son of Empire Maker has only two crops of racing age, but has already given the racing world runners like Jojo Warrior, Cairo Prince, Vinceremos, Social Inclusion, and breakout juvenile American Pharoah.

American Pharoah was the 2014 favorite for the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile, before he was reluctantly scratched from the race due to a foot bruise following a very strong workout. While he is out until his early three-year-old season, the colt is likely one of the favorites for the 2015 Kentucky Derby, as of now.

American Pharoah did not fair well in his debut, finishing fifth after trouble in the post parade, getting hot, rank in the race, and finally weakening in the final stages of the race. In his second start, which was the grade one Del Mar Futurity, the colt went to the lead, instead of being rated, and never looked back. He finished almost five lengths in front of Calculator, who was another 8 ¼ lengths in front of the third place horse.

While American Pharoah was finishing in front of Calculator and Texas Red, he was showing just how truly fast he was. He was also showing how one-dimensional he was. American Pharoah, as of now, is a get to the lead and stay on the lead kind of horse. If the colt can mature in his three-year-old season and be able to rate just a bit, to save some energy, he would likely have a better shot at the Triple Crown races.

American Pharoah has won races at 8.5 furlongs, but with the races getting longer on the Triple Crown trail and the trifecta of Classic races, the colt is likely to struggle a bit. While he has the breeding on top to get the distance, the colt’s damsire, Yankee Gentleman, was an allowance level sprinter, despite his Handicap win in the Pirate’s Bounty at Del Mar. Littleprincessemma, American Pharoah’s dam, was never a winner in two starts.

American Pharoah has ten points to his record in the Road to the Kentucky Derby, and where he ends up next is unknown, as his foot bruise is not healed yet. The Zayat owned colt should be a contender on the Kentucky Derby and Triple Crown trail, but so far, running style and breeding say to look elsewhere.
