Lady Diana’s Fashion Legacy Continues to Thrive
Princess Diana was celebrated for many qualities, including her charitable nature and impeccable fashion sense. She rightfully earned the nickname “Queen of Hearts” through her extensive charity work, often visiting sick children. Diana had a particular dress she frequently wore to these visits, not just out of personal preference, but because she noticed its popularity among the children.
Breathtaking Royal Fashion: 25 Looks from Lady Diana
In a June 2021 interview with US Weekly, Matthew Storey, curator of the exhibition Royal Style in the Making, shared that “Diana was aware that children were especially drawn to this dress. Kids are attracted to bright colors, which is why she often wore it while visiting sick children.”
The dress in question is a blue China crepe day dress with a pastel floral print by Bellville Sassoon. Originally designed for her 1988 tour of Australia, Diana continued to wear it until 1992. She donned it for various occasions – official visits, public appearances, and, notably, hospital visits – earning it the nickname “Caring Dress.”
Princess Diana’s Repeated Fashion Choice Makes Headlines
It was unusual for a royal family member to wear the same outfit on multiple occasions, which sometimes frustrated the press since it was unclear if photos were new or reused. On July 21, 1992, the Daily Mail published an article about this particular dress titled “Very endearing, very enduring” with the headline: “Does this look familiar? Yes, it’s that dress again.”
Even today, this dress continues to capture admiration. On June 26, Julien’s Auctions held a major auction in Los Angeles featuring nearly 200 lots of Lady Di’s belongings, including this iconic dress.
Princess Diana’s Dress Fetches Over Half a Million Dollars
Initially estimated to sell for between $200,000 and $300,000, the dress ultimately fetched a whopping $520,000 after nine bids. The winner did not hide her excitement, and a video of her joyful reaction circulated widely on social media.
This isn’t the first time an outfit from the Princess of Wales has exceeded expectations. Earlier auctions held in the UK in 2023 brought in nearly $6 million!
More Than Just a Dress, a Legacy of Love and Care
Princess Diana’s choices in fashion, deliberately or not, often conveyed deeper messages of empathy and accessibility. Her “Caring Dress” not only represents her style but also her compassionate approach to her royal duties, resonating with people even decades after her passing.
