The Eclipse Award champion, Idiomatic, drew the fourth slot, while her primary competitor, Randomized, drew the outermost position in the five-horse field on Friday for the Grade 1, $500,000 Personal Ensign Stakes. This is a 1 1/8-mile race for mature fillies and mares at Saratoga.

Last year, Idiomatic won the Personal Ensign by a margin of four lengths, which was part of a six-race winning streak that continued into early this year. During this streak, she secured the 2023 championship for older dirt females by winning the Breeders’ Cup Distaff at Santa Anita.

That triumph in California came at the expense of Randomized, who managed to even the score on June 8 when she capitalized on Idiomatic’s poor start and bested her by a head in the Ogden Phipps (G1). This race was run over the same course and distance as they will encounter again in the Personal Ensign.

A 5-year-old Juddmonte homebred daughter of Curlin who is trained by Brad Cox, Idiomatic is coming off her win by a head in the Molly Pitcher (G3) on July 20 at Monmouth Park. This was a surprisingly close finish for a 1-10 favorite. She will be ridden by her usual jockey, Florent Géroux, as she attempts to increase her $3,476,840 in earnings.

Randomized, a 4-year-old Nyquist filly trained by Chad Brown, will be racing for the first time since the Phipps. Prior to that, she was a beaten, odds-on favorite in the Ruffian (G2) at Aqueduct. With earnings of $1,258,350 for Klaravich Stables, Randomized will be ridden for the second consecutive time by Joel Rosario.

Brown also entered Raging Sea, a three-time graded-stakes winner and 4-year-old, who took first place in the Shuvee (G2) on July 21 at Saratoga after a tired fourth-place finish in the Phipps. Flavien Prat will guide her from the third post position.

Xigera, a 4-year-old with two graded-stakes wins, is hoping to recover from her disappointing fifth-place finish in the Fleur de Lis (G2) when she starts from the first post. Soul of an Angel, the 5-year-old who gave Idiomatic a run for her money in the Molly Pitcher, will start from the second post.

The Personal Ensign is scheduled to be the 10th of 12 races at Saratoga on Friday at 5:43 p.m. EDT. The first race is set to start at 12:35 p.m. EDT.
