The Best of the Best in The 2014 Arlington Million

The Best of the Best in The 2014 Arlington MillionThe Arlington Million seems fairly wide open, with a lot of European invaders. Can Real Solution actually cross the finish line first this time? Can Up With the Birds get back to the top form he had in 2013? Could Magician be ripe for another victory on American turf? Can the hard knocking Smoking Sun come here and win? Can Finnegan’s Wake unleash his best here, after running his best race to date last out, in the Arlington Handicap? European invader Side Glance is also looking to find his top form.

When I look at the Arlington Million, I could make a case for just about any horse in the field. I would make the strongest cases for Magician, Real Solution, and Up With the Birds.

Up With the Birds was at top form last year, winning multiple stakes races, and two graded stakes, one being a grade one win. The 10f may be a bit outside scope, as his longest distance that produced a win was 9f. Can he get the extra furlong against distance loving turf specialists?

What about Real Solution? He has only crossed the finish line in front four times out of his five wins. He won the 2013 Arlington Million by disqualification (watch replay). His best distance seems to be the 1 ¼ mile, as he will see in this race. Can he get over his stalling, waiting for horses to come to him, a tactic that usually gets him beat, or can he dominate on his home turf?

What about top notch European invader, and Breeders’ Cup Turf winner Magician? He could seemingly win at any distance, as his record shows. He was on at a mile, 1 5/16 miles, 1 ½ mile, and 1 ¼ miles. He has come to the United States before, beating the best distance turf runners we have.

Whoever wins the Arlington Million, we will see the best of the best turf distance runners from around the world, and that runner will be guaranteed a spot in the Breeders’ Cup Turf, the year end 2-day championships.

The 2014 Arlington Million takes place on Saturday, August 16, 2014 at Arlington Park with an approximate post time of 5:36 PM CT and is the 10th race of the day.
