The Jerry Hollendorfer California bred Tamarando leads the pack in the 2014 Spiral Stakes as the morning line favorite with 3-1 odds. The dark bay colt has won four of his ten career races most recently the El Camino Real Derby on February 15, 2014 with jockey Russell Baze. The duo teams up again for the Spiral breaking from post position #4. Mr. and Mrs. Larry D. Williams own Tamarando who currently sits in 19th place on the Kentucky Derby leaderboard with 12 points. Trainer Jerry Hollendorfer has already won the Spiral Stakes twice, in 1998 with Event of The Year and again in 2000 with Globalize with jockey Russell Baze in the saddle.

Ken & Sarah Ramsey’s We Miss Artie will officially be three-years-old on March 30th. As the 2nd morning line favorite in the 2014 Spiral Stakes with 4-1 odds, We Miss Artie has finished first only two times throughout his difficult seven race career. The Todd Pletcher trained colt most recently finished 8th in the Besilu Stables Fountain of Youth at Gulfstream Park. We Miss Artie is currently in 23rd place on the Kentucky Derby leaderboard with 10 points. We Miss Artie teams up with jockey John Velazquez in the 2014 Spiral Stakes breaking from post position #11.

Travis Hembed, from Team Ramsey told us, “We Miss Artie has been training great. We know he loves the synthetic track and we’re expecting a big race from him. He’s been my Derby horse all along. Even though his dirt races don’t look inspiring he’s had an excuse every time he’s run on it. Hopefully everything falls into place for him Saturday.”

Next up on the morning line favorite list is Poker Player, who comes in with 5-1 for the 2014 Spiral Stakes. This Wayne Catalano trained colt finished 2nd last out in the John Battaglia Memorial Stakes on March 1st at Turfway Park. Out of five career races, Poker Player has won two. Poker Player and jockey Channing Hill will break from post position #3 on Saturday. Poker Player currently does not hold a position on the Kentucky Derby leaderboard.

Last year, after winning the 2013 Spiral Stakes with jockey Joe Bravo, Black Onyx was nominated for the 2013 Triple Crown. Nominations for the Triple Crown ended the day Black Onyx won the Spiral Stakes and his owners paid the hefty late fee price of $6000 to ensure a start in the 2013 Kentucky Derby. The Triple Crown nomination fee is only $600 if a horse is nominated before January 26th. Despite trainer Kelly Breen’s excitement and eagerness to race Black Onyx in the 2013 Kentucky Derby, the dark bay 50-1 longshot colt was sadly scratched just the day before due to a bone chip in his left front ankle.

The 2014 Horseshoe Casino Cincinnati Racing Spiral Stakes is the 11th race of the day on Saturday, March 22nd with a post time of 6:28 PM EDT. Other stakes races at Turfway Park include the GIII Fathead Bourbonette Oaks at 5:42 PM and the Hansen Starter Handicap at 5:06 PM. Good Luck, Safe Run to all of the contenders!
