Amid this crisis, French solidarity has been overwhelming, with farmers equipped with large water tanks traveling hundreds of miles to supply water to firefighting trucks and help contain the fires.<\/p>\n
Responding to French President Emmanuel Macron\u2019s call for European solidarity, other nations have stepped in to support the French firefighters. On Monday, August 3, Australian volunteers from the Rural Fire Service, along with two water-bombing helicopters, landed in Mont-de-Marsan to join the efforts. In this wave of heroism, some players from the textile industry have also decided to contribute. Among them, a highly popular Japanese fashion brand, beloved by the French for its minimalist style, technical quality of its products, and affordable prices.<\/p>\n
\nJust four days ago, Uniqlo announced a donation of one million euros to the French Secours Populaire and Sud-Ouest Solidarit\u00e9. Additionally, 50,000 pieces of clothing will be donated to those displaced and affected by the fires. In a monumental act of support, Uniqlo stores across France, in collaboration with the Red Cross, will also set up a donation drive. “Every donation will be matched by Uniqlo to support the firefighters and meet the urgent needs of the affected communities,” according to the brand’s Instagram post.<\/p>\n
Currently, Uniqlo is the only fashion entity that has openly expressed its financial support for the massive fire affecting the French landscape. Internationally, the brand had previously shown its commitment during the Los Angeles fires in January 2025. At that time, Uniqlo contributed one million dollars, donated $25,000 to the California Fire Foundation, and distributed about 5,000 essential items such as HEATTECH clothing, underwear, and socks to the victims.<\/p>\n
\nWhile some users like @luciebollivier commend the initiative, others are more critical, accusing the brand of greenwashing and even hypocrisy. The fashion industry significantly contributes to climate change, which is partly responsible for the magnitude of these historically significant fires across Europe. More than 450,000 hectares have been affected in France, Spain, and Greece, “which is 2.6 times more than the average accumulations recorded by Effis in the last two decades by the end of July.” Beyond this contradiction, critics also accuse Uniqlo of trying to “buy a good image” by obscuring its exploitation of the Uighurs with this charitable act.<\/p>\n\n\n
