For many, the fashion industry seems shrouded in secrecy, with some perceiving it as deliberately opaque. It’s particularly challenging to obtain straightforward information about clothing production. Questions like where and how garments are produced, as well as whether they consider both human and environmental well-being, are tough to answer. But soon, a new type of information will be added to labels that will illuminate the quality of clothing in an instant.<\/p>\n
Starting on October 1, 2025, this new data will be displayed as a score, initially on a voluntary basis. Media outlets have already dubbed it the “clothing nutri-score.” Approved by the European Commission in May 2025, this rating aims to assess the environmental impact of the garment. Essentially, the higher the score, the more detrimental the clothing is considered for the environment. This score has no upper limit and could potentially extend from zero to infinity. The system, named “Ecobalyse,” evaluates 16 different criteria.<\/p>\n
The criteria for the Ecobalyse score include water usage, carbon emissions, fossil resource use, production volumes (“fast fashion coefficient”), recyclability potential, and microplastic emissions during washing, among others. The evaluation considers the entire lifecycle of the garment, from its creation to its demise or potential reuse.<\/p>\n
While some critics question the clarity and actual usefulness of this score for consumers, it nonetheless aims to guide better purchasing decisions\u2014not just for environmental reasons but also economically. Shoppers will be able to compare the Ecobalyse score with the garment\u2019s price and decide if the environmental impact justifies the cost.<\/p>\n
Moreover, the Ecobalyse score could help consumers choose between two similarly priced items. The score will also add a layer of transparency to an industry often criticized for its lack of clarity; simply opting to display the Ecobalyse score will speak volumes about a brand\u2019s ethical commitments.
