Anna Wintour Steps Aside, Invites Designer to Take Creative Lead
For the first time ever, Anna Wintour has handed over the artistic reins of the December issue of Vogue US to a designer. The lucky individual chosen is none other than Marc Jacobs, who opted to feature his longstanding friend Kaia Gerber on the cover.
A Historic Shift at Vogue US
Since 1988, Anna Wintour has been the mastermind behind every cover of Vogue US as its editor-in-chief. However, this longstanding tradition was altered with the December edition, as Wintour co-edited the issue with her friend, fashion designer Marc Jacobs. This surprising collaboration made headlines and even left Jacobs himself astonished. “Had you asked me at any point in my life, I never would have imagined I’d be a guest editor at Vogue,” he commented during an interview with the magazine.
Marc Jacobs Chooses Kaia Gerber for the Cover
For this special edition, Jacobs immediately knew he wanted Kaia Gerber for the cover. Having been friends for many years and previously collaborating in 2016, it was Jacobs who gave Gerber her first major contract as the face of his beauty brand. Now, they are once again joining forces to create a cover and series of photos that have been well received for their playfulness—a quality some say was missing from the American magazine.
The issue features an array of exaggerated styles and vibrant colors, revisiting 60s trends with a blend of caricature and modernity. Kaia Gerber showcases Marc Jacobs’ creations from his Fall-Winter 2024 collection. On the cover, she poses against a pastel green background in an electric blue and pastel pink off-the-shoulder dress, complemented by oversized white gloves. The photos are bursting with color and highlight the artistic efforts behind the scenes, including work by hairstylist Guido Palau and makeup artist Pat McGrath.
Kaia Gerber’s Fourth Vogue US Cover
This cover marks Kaia Gerber’s fourth appearance on Vogue US. At the magazine’s dedicated event, she expressed how each time feels increasingly special. Gerber took to Instagram to extend her gratitude, saying, “Thank you Marc, for your unwavering trust in me. It has been such a privilege to work with you over the last decade. You create beauty with a sense of humor in a world that sorely needs it. Thank you Anna for your support from the start and for always allowing room for individuality. You have a gift for seeing the beauty in its entirety, for diving deeper into people’s ethos, and for impacting each of us.”
December Issue Creates Buzz
Despite Marc Jacobs’ initial doubts about fulfilling the role, the December edition of Vogue US has already created a buzz in the fashion world, signaling a successful collaboration and perhaps a new direction in editorial leadership at the iconic magazine.
